David Lawrence-Young
David Lawrence-Young was an English teacher and lecturer at schools and universities for over 40 years before retiring in 2013. He is happiest when he is researching Shakespeare, English and military history or quirky aspects of British history. In addition to editing Communicating in English, a best-selling textbook, he has written twenty-five mainly historical novels which have been published in the UK, USA and Israel. His book, Doctor Lopez: Trapped in the Royal Web, was also published by Mazo Publishers.
He has been a frequent contributor to Forum, a magazine for English language teachers and also to Skirmish, a military history journal. He is a member of the Israeli Association of Writers in English, a board member of the Jewish History Society of England, and from 2008-2014 was the Chairman of the Jerusalem Shakespeare Club. He is also a published (USA) and exhibited photographer (UK and Jerusalem). He loves traveling, plays the clarinet (badly) and is married and has two children.

Fleeing from the Portuguese Inquisition to England, Roderigo “Ruy” Lopez, a Jewish doctor, establishes himself in London. He gains a prestigious post at St. Bart’s Hospital and becomes the personal physician to Queen Elizabeth I and several aristocrats including the Earl of Essex.
All goes well until Sir Francis Walsingham, the head of the queen’s Secret Service, conscripts Lopez to be a spy and engage in espionage. He now has to follow what Spain, England’s great enemy, is plotting.
Subsequently, the unwary Lopez becomes inadvertently trapped in the royal web as the political battles between the queen’s important ministers and the vengeful Essex unfold. Lopez has no way of seeing how his international ventures will backfire on him, and being Jewish in an anti-Semitic court does not help.
